چکیده

An estimate for the number of ionizing photons per baryon as a function of redshift is computed based on the plausible extrapolation of the observed galaxy UV luminosity function and the latest results on the properties of the escape fraction of ionizing radiation. It is found that, if the escape fraction for low mass galaxies (MTOT . 1011 M⊙) is assumed to be negligibly small, as indicated by numerical simulations, then there are not enough ionizing photons to reionize the universe by z = 6 for the cosmology favored by the WMAP 3rd year results, while the WMAP 1st year cosmology is marginally consistent with the reionization requirement. The escape fraction as a function of galaxy mass would have to be constant to within a factor of two for the whole mass range of galaxies for reionization to be possible within the WMAP 3rd year cosmology. Did Globular Clusters Reionize the Universe ?

A problem still unsolved in cosmology is the identification of the sources of radiation able to reionize H i in the intergalactic medium (IGM) by z ∼ 6. Theoretical works and observations seem to indicate that the fraction, 〈fesc〉, of H i ionizing radiation emitted from galaxies that escapes into the IGM is small in the local universe (〈fesc〉 < ∼ 10%). At high redshift galaxies are more compact...

The early reionization with the primordial magnetic fields

The early reionization of the intergalactic medium, which is favored from the WMAP temperature-polarization cross-correlations, contests the validity of the standard scenario of structure formation in the cold dark matter cosmogony. It is difficult to achieve early enough star formation without rather extreme assumptions such as very high escape fraction of ionizing photons from proto-galaxies ...

Evolution of the Intergalactic Opacity: Implications for the Ionizing Background, Cosmic Star Formation, and Quasar Activity

We investigate the implications of the intergalactic opacity for the evolution of the cosmic ultraviolet luminosity density and its sources. Our main constraint follows from our measurement of the Lyman-α forest opacity at redshifts 2 ≤ z ≤ 4.2 from a sample of 86 high-resolution quasar spectra. In addition, we impose the requirements that intergalactic HI must be reionized by z = 6 and HeII by...

Early chemical enrichment of the universe and the role of very massive pop III stars

In this paper the role of very massive pop III stars in the chemical enrichment of the early universe is discussed. We first compare our predictions with the abundance ratios measured in the high redshift Lymanα forest to check whether they are compatible with the values predicted by assuming that the early universe was enriched by massive pop III stars. We conclude that to explain the observed...

Reionization by Hard Photons: I. X-rays from the First Star Clusters

Observations of the Lyα forest at z ∼ 3 reveal an average metallicity Z ∼ 10Z⊙. The high-redshift supernovae that polluted the IGM also accelerated relativistic electrons. Since the energy density of the CMB ∝ (1 + z)4, at high redshift these electrons cool via inverse Compton scattering. Thus, the first star clusters emit X-rays. Unlike stellar UV ionizing photons, these X-rays can escape easi...
